Description
Pearse, Alfred (1854-1933)
A London painter and a notable black-and-white illustrator, Pearse's wood engravings in various magazines consisently show their own unique style. The uniqueness of his work suggests that Pearse either cut his own wood blocks or employed a very distinctive engraver. His later work- wash drawings made for Blackie- are generally constued as being less impressive. These wash drawings were reproduced using halftone blocks and a number of them also feature deep etching and hand engraving. Pearse also made watercolour drawings, which were reproduced in colour in later Blackie editions (Newbolt, 1996, p. 633)
